The &#8220;Neue Weststadt&#8221; was selected from more than 60 competitors as one of six lighthouse projects in Germany. Joint funding by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi) and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is intended to enable successful implementation and monitoring of the project. The realization of a climate-neutral neighborhood is an important element in achieving the municipal climate protection goals. By 2020, CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions in the Esslingen city are to be reduced by a quarter.
